How to Reset Your Microsoft 365 Password

Purpose

This guide explains how to reset your Microsoft 365 password using Microsoft's Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) feature.

If you have forgotten your password, your account is locked, or your password has expired, follow the steps below to regain access to your account.

Before You Begin

You may be able to reset your password yourself if you have previously configured:

  • Microsoft Authenticator

  • A mobile phone number

  • An alternate email address

  • Security questions (if enabled by your organization)

If you have not configured these methods, contact your IT Support Team for assistance.

Option 1: Reset a Forgotten Password

Step 1

Open a web browser and navigate to:

https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com

Step 2

Enter your company email address.

Example:

john.smith@company.com

Step 3

Complete the CAPTCHA verification.

Step 4

Select Next.

Step 5

Choose one of your available verification methods:

  • Microsoft Authenticator App

  • Text Message

  • Phone Call

  • Alternate Email Address

Step 6

Complete the verification process.

Step 7

Create a new password.

Your new password must meet your organization's password requirements.

Step 8

Select Finish.

Your password has now been reset.

Option 2: Change Your Password While Logged In

If you know your current password and simply want to change it:

Step 1

Sign in to:

https://myaccount.microsoft.com

Step 2

Select Password from the left navigation menu.

Step 3

Choose Change Password.

Step 4

Enter:

  • Current Password

  • New Password

  • Confirm New Password

Step 5

Select Submit.

Your password will be updated immediately.

Password Best Practices

When creating a new password:

Use:

  • At least 12 characters

  • A unique password not used elsewhere

  • A mix of letters, numbers, and symbols

  • A passphrase that is easy for you to remember

Avoid:

  • Company names

  • Family member names

  • Birthdays

  • Dictionary words

  • Reusing old passwords

Example Passphrase

Instead of:

Password123!

Use something similar to:

BlueRiver!RunsFast2026

After Resetting Your Password

You may need to sign back into:

  • Outlook

  • Microsoft Teams

  • OneDrive

  • SharePoint

  • Mobile email applications

  • Other Microsoft 365 applications

If prompted, enter your new password.

Common Issues

I Do Not Receive a Verification Code

Verify that:

  • Your phone number is correct.

  • You have cellular service.

  • Your Microsoft Authenticator app is accessible.
